Why gatekeep?

I have a funny story in regard to the top I am wearing in the above pic. I was at a West Hollywood hot spot, and a girl had this top on. I was a few drinks in, and I am not afraid to tell someone 1. you look great, and 2. if I love something someone is wearing I have no shame in asking where it is from. I heard someone say that’s bad manners, but hey, if you like something why not ask someone where they got it?! The girl kind of gave me an up-down, and I could tell this wasn’t going to go well. She was like, “hmmmmm, I really can’t remember. I think it is Attico.” Now, mind you, Attico is a high-end brand. Their tops are in the $500 plus range. So, of course, I spent days trying to stalk this “Attico” top online, I was Google searching. stalking eBay and Poshmark. Less than a week later I saw the SAME top on one of my favorite fitness influencers, and she so kindly disclosed it was For Love and Lemons on Free People’s website, for under $150. SCORE! But, I was so annoyed. Why would this girl gatekeep such a cute, fun find?!!!!!!
