What The Gut
Does anyone remember this scene from SATC? Watching it back made me slightly angry, mostly because Samantha looks great. And also, what friends would do that?!!!!
I get what they were going for; Samantha was forever ridiculed for aging (and being older) and they were trying to play up a popular Menopause issue, which is mid-section weight gain.
The 2 major mid-life complaints I have heard from friends and readers are weight gain and sleep. Weight gain, specifically the mid-section seems to be the problem area for most!
“Midsection weight gain, also known as "belly fat" or "meno belly", is a common occurrence during perimenopause. This is due to several factors, including hormonal changes that cause fat to redistribute from the hips and thighs to the abdomen:
Estrogen levels
Estrogen helps the body metabolize fat and store it in certain areas, like the hips. When estrogen levels fluctuate during perimenopause, this signal weakens and fat is more likely to accumulate around the abdomen.
Testosterone levels
Stable testosterone levels can also contribute to fat redistribution during perimenopause.
You can find great info from the Mayo Clinic HERE.
I started dealing with this myself around 43. High stress and continuous elevated cortisol levels, increased alcohol consumption, and intense workouts completely wreaked havoc on my body.
I have talked about this many times, but if you are dealing with hormonal issues I highly recommend seeing a Naturopath or integrative medicine Dr. to get you on the right path. To figure out the root causes of your problems, and come up with a plan, instead of just getting prescribed something.
I tried Western med Dr.s and left sad and disappointed at every single appointment. If you are looking for naturopath Dr.’s I can recommend Dr. Chaney in KC and Dr.. Gran in LA.
My tips to reduce the mid-life/mid-section weight gain:
I highly recommend eliminating all processed foods, gluten, dairy and sugar! If you eat a lot of the above, I would consider doing a gut cleanse; a great reset to help you feel your best! Suzan Galluzzo is a great resource for this!
