I don’t remember shopping being so stressful as a pre-teen/teen, back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I assume this is because our choices were very limited. We had no online shopping. We had to shop what was in our local mall, or if you were lucky you lived in a big city or traveled to a bigger city where the shopping was slightly better than what was in your hometown. I remember going to Chicago was always a treat!
Having no social media at that time suppressed some of the pressures of “keeping up”, but I distinctly remember wanting to have everything Esprit, Guess, and Benetton. Benetton was the #1 brand I coveted, and I worked hard doing chores to shop there!
Nowadays there is SO much pressure on these kids. Brands, trends, and the sheer expense of things have gotten out of control! I think it is interesting now with social media no matter where you go the kids all seem to be dressing the same! But, I think that different regions across the US see certain trend shifts, so I will share a little bit of what is trending here in Southern California.
