As a young girl growing up in the Midwest, I would pore over Vogue, Teen Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire, and of course every tabloid magazine for celebrity style updates. Before social media, magazines were the only reference for what was happening outside of my suburban bubble.
From the middle of the country I was enamored by the glossy LA lifestyle, and I was equally inspired by the classic, chic women on the East Coast.
In the 90s LA had Kitson, Fred Segal and Ron Herman, Paparazzi snaps at The Ivy, Rodeo Drive, LV Murakami bags, The Hilton Sisters, Nicole Richie, West Hollywood nightlife, DENIM…low slung and distressed, a rainbow of Juicy Couture and Von Dutch hats.
NYC had Carolyn Bessette, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Sex and The City, and SJP, Bungalow 8, Soho boutiques, The 2 B’s: Bergdorfs and Bendels, Vivienne Tam, Prada, monochromatic style, the power suit, downtown working girl chic.
I knew I would end up on one end of the coasts, eventually.
